A visit to the hospital

Last month Paul went into hospital for knee surgery, so we stayed in overnight and, in the process, gained some insights into hospitals and the health care system in Taiwan.

Paul's knee before surgery

Paul being wheeled into surgery...

...and then the waiting began for me!

And as I waited, I came across these two signs/maps:

Notice anything different about them?

Before coming to Taiwan we had heard that lots of public buildings including hospitals don't have fourth floors (well, they do - obviously! - but they aren't labelled as such) because in Chinese Mandarin the words for 'four' and 'death' sound very similar.

In the first photo you can see that, sure enough, instead of having a fourth floor, or a '4F', the hospital had a '3MF' floor!

Not only that, but I also discovered that, as you can see (or possibly not - it might be too small!) from the second photo, there was no operating room 4, or 'OR4'!

Aside from the cultural insights that we gained during our hospital stay, we're thankful that the Taiwanese health care system is very good and that Paul's surgery went well!
